![]() The Cumby district has an enrollment of about 360 students. The school has a building for science labs, and also on campus is a self-contained cafeteria, homemaking house, gymnasium, baseball field, administration offices and shop area. The campus has two main buildings, the elementary and high school building houses grades 7 through 12 while the elementary building houses kindergarten through sixth grade.
The school received a $1.5 million facilities grant for a new high school, which was reopened to classes in fall 2004. In April 2007, Cumby dedicated a new gymnasium. The plans called for an all computerized gym, complete with folding bleachers and basketball goals, lighting, heating and cooling systems, and security system. The district also reactivated its football program in 2001, playing a junior varsity schedule that year and became UIL eligible for varsity competition in 2002. Superintendent is Shaun Barnett, who was named to the post in the spring of 2008. Shelly Slaughter serves as elementary principal and Don Madden as high school principal.
The school board consists of seven elected members who meet third Thursday of each month. Cumby christened its new gym with a grand opening ceremony, including traditional cornerstone dedication by the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas. Well over 100 people filled on side of the new stands inside the all electric facility, with overflow spilling out to the entry way of gym. The school offers UIL activities, boys and girls sports and improved teaching facilities. Among the sports offered are football, volleyball, basketball, cross country, baseball, softball, golf, and track and field. Student organizations include Beta Club, FFA, cheerleading, student council and yearbook. Cumby ISD was among only 217 districts in the state that were recognized in state accountability ratings. Cumby Elementary was a recognized campus, while Cumby High School was ranked academically acceptable.
