The Sulphur Bluff Independent School District is located in the northeast corner of Hopkins County. It includes about 259 students from Nelta, Flora, Dike and Sulphur Bluff.

Sulphur Bluff was the first school in Hopkins County and was originally located at the "Old Bluff," one of the first settlements in the county.

The one central campus houses grades prekindergarten through grade 12. The school building has 20 classrooms, a library and a lunchroom. The school recently constructed a new gymnasium, complete with three new classrooms and a stage. Funding for the new building was paid primarily through a state Instructional Facilities Allotment Grant, which covered $79, 140 or about 80 percent of the overall cost. The school district, per terms of grant approval, was made responsible for $20,860 of that grant, according to Texas Education Agency. A bond election was held in May of 2000. The result was voter approval of $1 million bond proposal and a marginal tax increase.

Ricky Beadles was the superintendent in 2007-2008 but is returning to Celeste ISD to continue his career in education. The district has named Robert Ross as the finalist for superintendent. Ross is currently superintendent of Olfen Independent School District in Rowena. Ross has 19 years of experience in administration, serving as principal at all levels from elementary to middle school and high school at small rural school systems and middle-sized districts.

The school board consists of seven elected members. The telephone number is 903-945-2460. The school offers vocational courses, varsity sports and UIL activities, which the school not only hosted last year but also, took the elementary championship and rated second overall in junior high UIL. Other extracurricular activities include FFA, FCA, FCCLA and Beta Club. Varsity sports include volleyball, softball and baseball, and boys and girls cross country, basketball and track and field.
