![]() Sulphur Springs Independent School District, a class 4A district according to University Interscholastic League classification, is by far the largest district in the county with an enrollment of approximately 4,200 students annually. The district has four elementary schools, one intermediate school for 5th Grade, a middle school for 6-8th Grade and one high school for 9-12th Grade. Early Childhood Learning Center, the district's youngest and newest campus, houses students in first grade, kindergarten, pre-kindergarten, early childhood and Head Start classes. It also hosts the Beginnings Learning Center, SSISD's 3-year-old program. The board of trustees is made up of Jackie Brice, Foy Williams, Jack Chubb, Don Sapaugh, Clay Johnson, Jason Dietze and Kerry Wright. Board members are elected by registered voters, with as many as three terms expiring every spring. The board meets at 6p.m. the second Monday of each month in the board room at the Administration Building, located at 631 Connally Street. The phone number is 903-885-2153. The district has a history of scoring high marks on accountability ratings, and two elementary schools stood out from the rest when Texas Education Agency last posted report cards. Lamar and Bowie Elementary Schools earned exemplary readings, the highest possible ranking to earn exemplary ratings. Bowie was commended on writing and mathematics scores, and Lamar was commended for reading/English language arts, writing and mathematics. Statewide, only 8 percent of the campuses rated by TEA were exemplary. Travis Elementary in SSISD was one of the two elementary campuses in all of Hopkins County to be recognized at the second highest level which they were commended for reading/English language arts, writing and mathematics. All other SSISD schools rated academically acceptable. For more information, visit www.ssisd.net |
